Upcoming Community EventsMarch 24: Dordt University student Julia Holleman will present a senior flute recital at 7:30 p.m. on Friday March 24, in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. The recital will feature a variety of instruments, such as harpsicord and cello on Bach’s Sonata IV in C Major and saxophone with flute performing a recently composed Hymn Suite collection. Another highlight of the recital is an alto flute performance of Atlantis by Gary Schocker, which employs the rich overtones of the alto flute to depict swirling water. Holleman will also be performing the first movement of the well-known Sonata by Francis Poulenc. All are welcome to a reception following the recital. March 25: Dordt University student Brody Joens will present a junior saxophone recital at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. The recital will feature a variety of styles and musical eras, including Classical, Baroque, French Romantic, Contemporary, and Jazz. Joens will be performing on soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone during the recital. A highlight of the repertoire is Blue Caprice, which features 14 different styles of jazz throughout the piece. In addition to solo saxophone pieces, the recital includes performances by a saxophone quartet and a jazz combo. All are welcome to a reception following the recital. March 31: Hope Haven will host their Annual Benefit Auction on Friday, March 31 at Te Slaa Trucking in Hull, IA (corner of Hwys 75 & 18). Help support individuals with disabilities through this exciting evening of fun and fellowship. March 31: The Joan Ringerwole Organ Recital Series presents British organist Wayne Marshall in a solo organ recital on Friday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium at Dordt University. As artist-in-residence at Dordt University, Wayne will work with the Chamber Orchestra as guest clinician, perform music in chapel, lead a masterclass to the organ studio, and present a solo organ recital, featuring his own compositions alongside standard repertoire such as Liszt’s Prelude and Fugue on BACH. His performance at Dordt is part of the Ringerwole Organ Recital Series, which is currently in its tenth year. The Joan Ringerwole Organ Recital series seeks to promote the organ and its repertoire for the musical education and enjoyment of students, alumni, and the community by bringing celebrated organists to Dordt University. April 1: Dordt University student Tommy Shin will present a senior voice recital at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. Selections range from Italian arias such as Puccini’s well-known “Questo amor, vergogna mia” from Edgar to selections from musicals such as “If I Were a Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof. Shin will sing in Korean during his performance of “In Your Dream” from the Korean musical Frankenstein. Seven other Dordt students will join Shin for a performance of an octet by Ralph Vaughan Williams. All are welcome to a reception following the recital. August 5: The Guiding Star Cycle Show for girls aged 9-13 is back! We have two great dates available - August 5 in Sioux Center This workshop was developed to give young girls the knowledge of what is going on inside their bodies in relation to puberty. Knowing the true beauty of their creation supports and prepares them in a positive way for the wonderful changes they will experience within their bodies over the coming years. Today, it is more important than ever for young girls to have high self-esteem regarding their bodies, not just when they are in the middle of puberty, but before the onset; "we can only protect what we value and respect"! Participation in the Cycle Show Workshop helps the girls value and respect their bodies as they move into their teenage years.
